Mrs. Lee’s Room

Ann Hill Carter Lee
Mrs. Lee's Bedroom
We continue up the final flight of stairs and through the sitting room area to what Robert E. Lee tells us was his mother's room. A portrait of Ann Hill Carter Lee, Robert's mother, looks down upon the antique filled room. Mrs. Lee was the granddaughter of the famous Robert "King" Carter of Shirley plantation.

She married Henry Lee, seventeen years her senior, at Shirley in 1793 while he was still governor. She ran Stratford Hall during Harry's imprisonment for debt and was instrumental in moving the family to Alexandria, which was home to many family connections. A frail woman, she came to lean heavily on eleven year old Robert after her husband's death and the departure of the older sons.
