The Dining Room |
Here, the house builder, John Potts, Jr.; and it’s second owner, William Fitzhugh and his wife, Anne Randolph Fitzhugh entertained the notables of the day including their close friend George Washington who dined here last on November 17, 1799, less than a month before his death.
Silverware crafted by Alexandria artisans of the time grace the American Hepplewhite mahogany three-part dining table.
Light-Horse Harry Lee was the only Revolutionary War officer below Major General for whom the Continental Congress struck a gold medal. He penned a history of the War in the South where he was cavalry commander under Nathanael Greene. He played a pivotal role in the Virginia convention approving the United States Constitution. Three times governor of Virginia, he is pictured as a Major General in 1794 when he was called upon by Washington to put down the Whiskey Rebellion in Western Pennsylvania, the first challenge to the new government.
During his one term in Congress, he was, as the one closest to George Washington, called upon to write the eulogy in which he coined the phrase, "first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen."
