Do you remember an early Federal style house on Oronoco Street in Alexandria? Do you remember resident Earl, the former policeman? Later residents were Tom Horan, then his sister Anne Horan, and the last resident Carl Rieman?
Do you remember museum staff: Virginia Bruch, Katherine Cook, Lucie Holland, Sarah Lewis, Molly Monaghan, Juanita Miller, Dresda Mullings, Deirdre Parker, and James Pendleton?
Do you remember docents: Debbie Baker, Muriel Blaser, Betty Beach, Elizabeth Beall, Rebecca Bowers, Lois Blum, Pat Brosius, Ann Calanni, Virginia Crawford, Jackie Clark, Alice Curtin, Catherine Desmaris, Joan Evans, David Dukes, Sue Fedder, Meg Guessford, Luella Harter, Carol Hasek, Mary Horton, Patty Jack, Gene Kizer, Bob LaChance, Esther Lihn, Mary Helen Lynch, Vaughn Mackay, Betty Miller, Jack Nelson, Mary O’Neill, Rita Premo, Mary Raitt, Carol Ramkey, Anna Rolen, Bill Seefeldt, Helen Shumate, Loretta Spittle, Emmy Stuart, Anne Tuccillo, and Denise Wight?
Do you remember docent Elizabeth Weaver? She had grown much too old to give tours, so she would collect the entrance fee from our guests, or she would sit in the summer kitchen and recall when the home became a museum. When the museum opened, it was empty of furniture, so Elizabeth sat on a folding chair beside a card table to greet guests, and Girl Scouts waited on the grand stairs to give tours.
Do you remember our handy neighbor Jim Marx; the gardeners and cleaners; Historic Alexandria Docents; the Lees of Virginia; and the Riversport Garden Club? Also, do you remember the caterers; rental companies; brides and grooms; our guests; special tours; and school tours? Do you remember Jackson the cat who lived a couple blocks away, but he came to most parties when he got scent of the fish canapes?
Do you remember wearing period dress? Do you remember the Birthday Party for the Lees; Virginia Garden Week; our commemoration of Custis-Fitzhugh Wedding Anniversary; our celebration of the Visit of Lafayette; the Spring Event; our Fall Luncheon; the Alexandria Candlelight Tours; and our Christmas Party?
Well I do! And, we remember General Robert E. Lee, his family, and their beautiful home.
