Potomac Canal, Lock One

Lock One was the largest in the canal system. This lock is 14 feet wide and 100 feet long. It is faced with Seneca stone. The lock could raise or lower boats 10 feet. A common type of river boat using the locks was the sharper. Sharpers were approximately 75 feet long, 5 feet wide, and had a draft of 18 inches when fully loaded. They could carry up to 20 tons of goods and had a crew of 3 to 5 men. Their cargos included flour, corn, furs, tobacco, pig iron, and timber. (Source: NPS publications) |
