"Washington," as he was called, lived at Mount Vernon until the death of his grandmother, Martha Washington, in 1802. At the time of his marriage he was already at work building Arlington on land bequeathed him by George Washington. Of him, Robert E. Lee said, "[He] has been for me all a father could, and whom I never cease fondly to regard and love as such."
