USMA Cadet Robert E. Lee
Cadet Robert E. Lee
(ca. 1826)

This portrait was one of a series of pastels showing Robert E. Lee at various stages of his military career painted by David Silvette of Richmond between 1958 and 1964. Most were rendered from photographs and portraits. This one must be purely conjectural since, as noted elsewhere, the 1838 "Wedding" portrait is the earliest known.

Conjectural or not, this portrait holds a special appeal because it is the one which attempts to show us the young man who lived in this house until leaving for West Point in 1825.
